Shirley Yukon Bernstein, 98, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Village Shalom. Graveside services will be at 2:30pm Friday, March 2, 2018, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of one’s choice.
Shirley was born October 13, 1919, in Wichita, KS, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Anna (Blender) Yukon and lived in the Kansas City area most of her life. Shirley was married for 60 years to Leon Bernstein, who passed in 2000.
Shirley had an amazing sense of humor and always had a positive outlook on life. She made us laugh all the time. Family was everything to her and her children and grandchildren loved spending time with her. She had a passion for all kinds of art. She learned to do everything: calligraphy, oil painting, china painting, water colors, enamel paintings and even stained glass.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was also preceded in death by her brothers: Stanley, Gerald and Abbott Yukon.
She is survived by her daughters: Nancy (Shelton) Gallas, Francie (Tim) Kelly; grandchildren: Rhonda (Jeff) Fromm, Amy (Eric) Schultz, Jessica Kelly, Megan Kelly; great-grandchildren: Abby, Laura and Scott Fromm, Jared and Nina Schultz, Leah Kelly; sister-in-law: Maxine Yukon as well as many nieces and nephews.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the staff of Village Shalom, Kansas City Hospice and Dr. Donald Cohen for all their wonderful care.
