Doris Flam Obituary (2006) - Mission Hills, Kansas

Doris Lichtor Flam, 79, of Mission Hills, KS, passed away Friday, April 14, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, April 17, 2006 at Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers. The family suggests contributions to Congregation Beth Shalom, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice. Doris’s career reflected her love of learning and children. She earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology and in Education and completed her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She taught at the Beth Shalom Nursery School and Sunday School for decades, became Director of Preschool and Day Care programs and Funtime Day Camp at the Jewish Community Center, and tested preschool children for learning disabilities. She later became co-owner of an import business with her dear friend Judy Bell. Her devotion to community was reflected in her service and commitment to volunteerism, and she was active in countless service organizations. She was a life-long member and served on the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Shalom, was Past President of the Beth Shalom Sisterhood, and was a Chapter President of Hadassah. She also was a Board member of the Jewish Federation of Kansas City and the Midwest Region of Women’s League. Along with her husband Paul, Doris was the recipient of the Beth Shalom Kovod Award and was honored by Israel Bonds. After serving as adult leaders of Kansas City’s Youth Pilgrimage to Israel for five summers, she and Paul conducted adult educational trips to Israel and expanded to include travels around the world. Doris was especially known for her writing ability and lent her skills to countless theatrical productions throughout the community, including Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, and Congregation Beth Shalom. Doris was preceded in death by her son, Lawrence Levine; parents, Samuel and Esther Lichtor; and brothers, Dr. Alexander Lichtor and Dr. Joseph Lichtor. Doris is survived by her husband, Paul Flam, of the home; children, Jeffrey Levine and Reed Fletcher, Kansas City, MO, and Douglas and Drew Levine, Mission, KS; stepchildren, Rabbi Alan Flam and Judy Semonoff, Barrington, RI, and Nina and David Shik, Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Lucy, Ezra, and Gabriel Semonoff-Flam, and Sarah and Jonathan Shik; sister-in-law, Margery Lichtor; and brother-in-law, Sol Flam.
