David Waxman Obituary (2007) - Prairie Village, Kansas

Dr. David Waxman, 89, of Prairie Village, KS passed away May 19, 2007. Funeral services will be at 11:30 am, Friday, May 25th at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave. Burial to follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the David Waxman Scholarship Fund at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in care of KU Endowment, 3901 Rainbow Blvd. Kansas City, Kansas 66160.Dr. Waxman was born February 7, 1918 in Albany, NY to Meyer Waxman and Fannie Strosberg Waxman. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1942 from The New York School of Forestry in Syracuse, NY. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March, 1942, initially serving in the infantry. He later joined the U.S. Army Air Corp and flew a number of different planes in the Pacific Theater during WWII including the B-24 bomber. In 1946, he entered Syracuse Medical School, Syracuse, NY and graduated in 1950. At Syracuse, he met his wife of 57 years, Jane Zabel Waxman MD. After an internship at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Waxman moved with his family to Kansas City, MO. He completed training in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center.Dr. Waxman continued his military career in the USAF Reserves, ultimately serving as National Consultant to the Surgeon General, USAF, retiring in 1978 with the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster and the rank Major General, the highest rank attainable by a physician reservist. Dr. Waxman practiced medicine both in private practice in Kansas City, MO and at the University of Kansas Medical Center as a professor of medicine. Later in his career he joined the administrative faculty at KUMC. He served as Dean for Students then ultimately became Executive Vice Chancellor of Kansas University Medical Center from 1978 – 1983. He retired from medicine in 1994 after serving as a special consultant to the Chancellor for health affairs. Dr. Waxman is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter Gail Prestigiacomo, PHR and husband Michael of Killeen, TX; son Michael Waxman, MD and wife Nancy, of Leawood, KS; son Dan Waxman, MD and wife Sharon of Indianapolis, IN; daughter Annie Lopez, JD and husband Alberto of Glencoe, IL; son Steve Waxman, MD and wife Betsy of San Antonio, TX; and daughter Abby Moore, CPA and husband Ronnie of Overbrook, KS; grandchildren: John, Jennifer, Sarah, Jacob, Rachel, Max, Sam, Isaac, Mary Jane, David, Walter, William, Chelsea and Jessica; sisters Lillian Kupperberg, Selma Margolis and Annette Adams; and brothers Arnold Waxman and wife Kathaleen and Irwin Waxman and wife Irma.
