Jean Lewis Rubenstein Obituary (2007)

Jean Lewis Rubenstein died Friday, December 28th after a prolonged illness. She was 79 years old. The daughter of George and Sylvia Lewis of Kansas City, Missouri, she was born October 7th, 1928 at St. Luke’s Hospital. A lifelong resident of Kansas City, Mrs. Rubenstein was a 1946 graduate of Southwest High School. She attended Mills College in Oakland, California and Washington University in St. Louis. She was married to Richard B. Rubenstein for 57 years. Mrs. Rubenstein was well known for her volunteerism and work throughout the greater Jewish Community. She served many years as the President of the Kansas City chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women. She was also a member of that organization’s national board. Mrs. Rubenstein served as President of the Women’s Division of the Kansas City Jewish Federation. She was a board member of the Kansas City Jewish Community Center, and worked as a text book editor for the American Jewish Committee in an effort to eliminate stereotypes, misinformation, and prejudices in school based literature. Later in her life Mrs. Rubenstein worked several years for TV 5’s “Call for Action”, a consumer affairs investigative unit at KCTV. She was a member of Oakwood Country Club, a volunteer at Menorah Medical Center’s Auxiliary, and with the Brandeis University Book Fair. A dear friend to many, Mrs. Rubenstein is survived by her husband Richard and their four children; Ms. Jane Rubenstein of Kansas City, Mr. John Rubenstein and his wife Arlene of Prairie Village, Kansas, Mrs. Ann Rubenstein Tisch and her husband Andrew of New York City, and Mr. Jim Rubenstein of Kansas City, Missouri. She is also survived by her brother George Lewis Jr. and his wife Beverly of Kansas City, and her sister-in-law Audrey Manne and her husband Leon of Miami Beach, FL. Her grandchildren are Michelle, Adam and Stacy Rubenstein of Prairie Village, and Sarah and Charlotte Tisch of New York City. A special thanks to her wonderful, loving nursing staff.
