Janice N. Klugman, 97, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2016, surrounded by loved ones. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Raytown, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Women’s American ORT, the ASPCA, or a charity of one’s choice.
Janice was born on May 4, 1918 in Clarksdale, MS to the late Michael and Anne Panich, and she had two brothers, Sanford and Harold Panich. She moved to Kansas City in 1934, where she met her husband, Al Klugman. They were married in 1940. Al was in the military, so they moved around the country early in their marriage, before returning to Kansas City to raise their family.
Janice was president of the PTA at Nelson School, volunteered for 10 years in a preschool that was the model for Head Start, and ran the bingo fundraiser for several years for Women’s American ORT. She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, was an avid reader, and she had a witty personality. Janice loved to cook for family and friends, especially for holidays and special occasions. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, several of whom affectionately called her “Granny.”
Janice is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 52 years, her two brothers and sisters-in-law, her son Steven, and her grandson Kenneth.
She is survived by her sons, Michael H. and Edward S. (Anne); her daughter-in-law, Elaine; her grandchildren Kory (Joanna), Kasey (Tina), Taylor, Megan, and Sarah; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends and loved ones. Her sense of humor and friendly personality will be greatly missed by all.
The family wishes to thank Continua Hospice, the staff at Villa Saint Joseph, and especially Agrifina Catapusan, ARNP, for all the support, compassion, and care during this time.
