Irving "Izzie" Millstein Obituary (1921 - 2010)

Irving Millstein, 89, Overland Park, KS passed away Friday, September 10, 2010. Graveside services 1:00pm, Sunday September 12 at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers, the family suggests contributions to Hospice of Overland Park. Born on July 28, 1921, Irving “Iz, Izzie, The Colonel, Possum” Millstein was the youngest of six children of Phillip and Tamara Millstein. Iz attended Westport High School, graduating in 1938. From there he attended and graduated from Kansas City Junior College in 1940. After college Iz went to work for Kansas City Life Insurance Co. on Broadway. He worked there until he joined the US Army Air Corps the month after the invasion of Pearl Harbor. He served in the Army Air Corps until discharged in 1946 as a Lieutenant. He then went into the Air Force Reserves where he retired as a Bird Colonel in 1971. Returning from active duty he began working in the family business, National Surplus Sales, at 18th and Charlotte. His time was spent at work and playing softball at the JCC. Iz retired from Century Laboratories in 1986. He was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue, where the Millsteins have belonged for nearly a century. At 89, he was the last surviving child of Phillip and Tamara. He was active at the JCC, loved the Chiefs and Royals, no matter how poor their performance. Iz died the same way he lived his life, at home, in peace and comfort and surrounded by his wife of 63 years, Gertie; daughter, Tami. He is also survived by son, Steve; daughter-in-law, Paula; and three grandchildren, Phillip, Jonathan and Madeline.
