Herbert S. Wolfson Obituary (2006) - Prairie Village, Kansas

Herbert S. Wolfson, Captain, U.S. Army, retired, 88, of Prairie Village, KS, passed away Monday, October 23, 2006. Funeral services will be 10:30am Friday, October 27, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Wolfson attended Northwestern University, Chicago from 1935-1939, graduating with a B.S. in Commerce and Economics and Business Administration. While at Northwestern, he was captain of their swim team and received the George Otis West medal for scholarship and leadership. After graduating, Mr. Wolfson worked for Sears in Chicago from 1939 to 1947. His career was interrupted by his military service from 1942 to 1946. Serving with the U.S. Army E.T.O. during WWII, he was a Captain serving in the Infantry and received the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation. Upon his discharge from the military, Mr. Wolfson was the Operating Superintendent for Sears in Kansas City 1947-1950; Owner of the Goodman Store in Bethany, MO 1950-1955; Vice President of Purchasing and Partner of the House of Fabrics in Kansas City from 1956-1967; then Vice President of Needlewoman Fabrics in Kansas City 1968-1980 when he retired. After his retirement, Mr. Wolfson was a member of: the Board of Directors and Treasurer for HACCD; Board of Directors for the Plaza Kiwanis Club; Board of Directors of the Johnson County YMCA; Executive Committee of the Brown and Gold Club and Newsletter Editor, Speakers Bureau Chair and Senior Leadership Program member of the Advisory Council, all at Johnson County Community College. Mr. Wolfson was a member of Congregation Beth Torah, Friends of Art at the Nelson Gallery, charter member of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C and was a life member of the Disables Veteran’s Association. He was born in Chicago, IL and came to Kansas City, via Bethany, MO. Mr. Wolfson was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Arene B. Wolfson, in 1994. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law: Dr. Frank and Billie Wolfson, Overland Park, KS; daughter and son-in-law: Alice and David Courtney, Phoenix, AZ; sister: Jannis Hattis, Chicago, IL and his twin granddaughters: Molly and Joanna Wolfson, Overland Park, KS.
