Avrom (Avy) Lustgarten Obituary (1925 - 2010)

Avrom (Avy) Lustgarten 85, died September 5, 2010 from complications of kidney disease. Funeral services in the Yukon Chapel at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 2:00pm Tuesday, September 7. Burial will follow. Contributions to Beth Shalom Synagogue or the American Kidney Foundation are requested in lieu of flowers. Avy was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Lillian Staenberg Lustgarten, brother Delmar Kaplan and sister Deloris Lustgarten Wendt. Avrom was born April 27, 1925 in Omaha NE, son of Estelle and Louis Lustgarten. He grew up in North Platte, Nebraska. Upon high school graduation, in 1943, he entered the US Army. He served during WW II and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1946 after serving in the Pacific theater of war. Avy worked with his father in the family business, North Platte Iron and Metal. He later worked as a supervisor at S-G Metals, a buyer at Kansas City Recycling, and supervisor at North Kansas City Iron & Metal. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts in North Platte NE, Jewish War Veterans of Kansas City, multiple Kansas City charities and the Overland Park Police Department. He was honored by OPPD as 2008 Volunteer of the Year. Avy was also a 50+ year member of the Masons. Avy was an avid photographer and enjoyed travel. He leaves behind his loving family, daughter Sharon Lustgarten Rosenthal (husband Jay Rosenthal) of Lenexa KS, son Sheldon Lustgarten (wife Juanita Ward Lustgarten) of Spartanburg, SC, son Ed Lustgarten (wife Naomi Levinson-Lustgarten) of St. Johns, FL, and granddaughters Anne and Rebecca Rosenthal. We will fondly remember and cherish his quick wit and generous smile. The family wishes to thank Avy’s caregivers at Sweet Life of Rosehill, and the doctors, nurses and staff at Shawnee Mission Medical Center and the University of Kansas Hospital.
